One of the benefits of working from home is that I can be there to help my kids.
One of the hazards of working from home is that my kids know I'm there, and they feel free to call on me for help all the time.
For some reason, as my kids hit high-school age, they become much more dependent on me to "rescue" them when they forget important stuff. My older son used to call me when he went to school without guitar picks on days when he had music practices or performances.
Miss Freshman calls me for clothes. This is the child who carries an enormous duffel bag (her little brother could probably fit inside it with room to spare) to school every day for track practice. All she needs for track are her running shoes, ankle brace, sweats and Under Armour. But she brings the shoes from every sport she has played in the past two years (basketball, track, field hockey and softball), a softball glove, and who knows what else.
What she doesn't bring is her sweatpants. Or a pair of gym socks. Three days out of five last week, I got a "distress call" at 2:35: "Mom, I have no pants!"
Did I mention that in the winter track season, they practice outdoors? And we've been having record cold weather? Yes, I rescued her.
It might be time for me to start working from a "remote location." I'm thinking Panera.
