Not everyone has their own in-house mechanic, but it sure is nice when you do. Just ask my sister. 
After dropping off one of her kids at a sports practice, she was headed home when the radio turned itself off. Then the speedometer needle plummeted to 0, even though she was still moving. At that point, she found a safe place to pull off the road and was extremely thankful that her cell phone had signal.
She was also glad that her husband was home, because he's a former auto mechanic. When she called him, she told him what had happened, and he asked her to open the hood, start the car, and let him listen to the engine sound. Then he headed off to the auto-parts store to purchase a new alternator.
Half an hour later, he showed up with the part in hand and installed it right then and there. No tow truck required!
