It's got to be all the time I spend volunteering at my son's germ factory elementary school. 
There's just no other explanation for how I wound up with an ear infection.
A simple cold is not going to send me to the doctor, and that's how it all started. After all, I'm around kids most of the time; after school, every little boy in the neighborhood comes here to play. But I thought it was weird that suddenly my ear was hurting.
My doctor thought it was weird too; I'm one of her younger patients, judging by my waiting-room companions. I guess that not too many people my age see an internist, and I guess that under normal circumstances she doesn't have much reason to use that otoscope. But when she decided to look into the ear that wasn't hurting, she immediately asked if I was sure I didn't have pain on that side as well. Yup, it was a double ear infection, for two times the fun!
