From the time I was in high school, I was wrapping my own Christmas presents. Mom would set me up with tape, wrapping paper and stacks of boxes in the living room, in front of a Christmas movie on TV, and instruct me to get busy wrapping.
"Don't open the boxes in that pile. Those are your presents," she would tell me.
Mom hates to wrap presents, so she figured it was better to take the chance that I might peek in exchange for the use of my wrapping skills and the opportunity to avoid doing this task herself. (For the record, I never peeked; it just didn't feel like it would be very fun on Christmas morning if I did.)
These past two years, I've wound up shopping for some of my own gifts as well. My mother-in-law doesn't drive much, so she hands me the Christmas money for my family and tells me to do all the shopping. If I get that shopping done early, the gifts arrive at her house in time for her to wrap them, at least. But there's no way for me to avoid knowing what's in the box with my name on it.
I could let my husband do the shopping, I suppose, but if I do that, and he winds up having to wrap, my present will be adorned in birthday paper--probably paper geared to little boys. For some reason he can never find the Christmas wrap (that I leave in plain sight) when it's time for him to wrap presents. So my gifts are the ones wrapped up in paper decorated with footballs and soccer balls.
