It's the most wonderful time of the year--and that means that the Homeroom Moms have their hands out once again.

When I was in grade school, it was customary for kids to bring a small gift for their teacher at Christmas.  Mom was a teacher, and she'd come home with everything from Christmas ornaments to platters of cookies to bottles of perfume.

Kids still give presents to their teachers, but now it's expected that there will be a whole-class gift as well.  The bar has been raised quite high at my son's school:  one year the Homeroom Moms raised money to buy a restaurant gift certificate and a bottle of wine for the teacher to enjoy.

So much for that Zero-Tolerance Policy about alcohol in the schools.

The Homeroom Moms are preparing for that Class Party that will happen before the school closes for the holidays as well.  They're stocking up on holiday-themed paper plates and making sure that there are enough unbroken candy canes for each child to have one.  The last thing you want at the Class Party is a first-grader crying because his candy cane is broken in three pieces.

Fun times.  That's why I'm so glad I'm not a Homeroom Mom.
