There's been a Christmas-gifting quiz making the rounds on Facebook these last few weeks, which breaks people down into five personality groups. I'm sure you know people from every one of these:
- The Last-Minute Gifter
- The Over-Gifter
- The Big-Ticket Gifter
- The Creative Gifter
- The Self-Gifter
I've been accused of doing that last thing myself. My husband always says, when he opens up a book I've purchased for him, that I secretly want to read it myself. For the record, that's not true. That book on the history of video games I got him two years ago? I am so not interested in that. On the other hand, any book I buy for my mom is one that I'd like to read, and I know that once she's done reading it, she'll offer to let me borrow it.
It's hard to buy stuff for my husband because if he wants something, he'll just go ahead and get it for himself. And his wants are usually pretty simple. This year, for example, he wanted an old Nintendo DS game that's only available used. Yes, I found it--for only $5.99. I hope he'll tell me something else that he wants, or there's no danger that I'm going to be "over-gifting" for him!
But when my purchase is $68 and I need $75 to get the free shipping, I've been known to browse the clearance section and pick up some little treat for myself. The way I see it, I could spend that $7 on shipping--or get something I'd enjoy with it. No contest.
I'm still not done shopping, and my husband's on vacation from work until after the New Year. I'm going to have to start getting creative.
