My husband has four pairs of shoes:  black dress shoes, black sneakers, white sneakers, and flip-flops.  Five, if you count the winter boots he only wears when it's time to shovel snow (which means that those boots were "nearly new" until this past winter, when they saw a huge amount of use.)

There is no way on earth that I could get along with only four or five pairs of shoes.  I might wear that many different shoes in a single day.  That's because you need to match the shoe to the activity.

I start the day in slippers, and those stay on my feet until it's time to walk Mr. Third Grader to his bus stop--though I will confess that if it's not a wet day, I might just wear the slippers to the bus stop.  But to bring laundry out to the clothesline to hang up, I'll change into my Crocs.  I hate getting my shoes and socks wet, so Crocs are great for walking through the wet grass.  If they get really muddy, I can leave them on the back porch until I get the chance to take them to the basement utility sink and rinse them off.

Crocs are good for hanging laundry, but not so good for other tasks.  Feeding the birds comes to mind.  Don't wear Crocs while you fill a bird feeder, unless you want sunflower seeds sticking to your socks all day.

Another place you need to be careful about footwear choices is the kitchen.  I'm a good cook, but not a neat cook--and I learned the hard way that it's not wise to wear suede shoes while baking or cooking.  While the flour brushed easily off my black suede clogs, I wasn't so lucky with the spaghetti-sauce drips.
