I remember going to Granma's the Sunday before Thanksgiving every year. Granma cooked the meal a few days early so there would be no "family feuds" about who was eating turkey at which in-law's house. But she had 5 kids and 15 grandchildren, so space in the dining room was limited. The kids ate in the kitchen.
Once we were out of our parents' direct view, we were free to eat as we wanted. That means that we could hold "Granma's Roll-Eating Contests" and table manners pretty much went out the window. One cousin got away with eating a single bite of turkey after she told her mom that she had taken a "sizable piece." And no grownups made us be quiet, use forks, or finish our green beans.
