The third grade is anxiously awaiting the arrival of its newest member. The teacher has promised them that they can get a class pet.
This won't be a furry friend, like the hamster that lived with the fifth grade when my older son was in grade school. (You know your child has a first-year teacher when the class pet is a hamster and she lets it run around the floor in its exercise ball during class.)
Instead, Mr. Third Grader's class is getting a gecko. They've been learning all about geckos: what they eat, what temperature their aquarium needs to stay at, and other important things about gecko care. The kids are even working to earn money for the gecko's groceries (crickets) by collecting and recycling juice-box pouches.
I'm sure the kids will be disappointed to learn that their class pet does not have an accent and won't be telling them how much they can save on their car insurance. But they'll still have a lot of fun!
