People ask me how my daughter's doing in high school.  My answer?  "She loves high school, but she hates being a freshman."

Freshman year--it's the low end of the totem pole for sure.  And my daughter's feeling it.  After having enjoyed lording it over the rest of the school last year as a Big Eighth Grader, it's hard to be at the bottom of the heap again.

She really felt it with the field hockey team.  As part of the freshman team, she learned pretty quickly that it was her job to carry stuff for the varsity team, cheer them on during their games, and be a "crash test dummy" for them during practices.  It was little, if any, consolation to her that in a few short years she'd be part of the varsity team and she'd get to order the freshmen around.

So she was really happy when I ran into her grade-school track coach's wife last week.  After asking me how Miss Freshman was doing, she told me that Coach had been wondering if she'd like to earn some community-service hours by helping out at some spring track meets and practices.  That made my daughter's day.  She'll have a chance to do something she loves--and get back to being a big fish in a little pond for a few afternoons.
