With apologies to lyricist Al Stillman, there's no place like home for Thanksgiving Day. I'll miss seeing my family (though I'll get to visit with most of them tomorrow) but I do enjoy having the holiday here at home.
Many people must agree, because the week around Thanksgiving is one of the heaviest travel times of the year.
The first time I spent Thanksgiving away from home, I was a graduate student living halfway across the country. Most of the grad students at the university spent the holiday at school, since we couldn't afford plane fares home too often. And I didn't eat in the dining halls, since I lived in a student apartment with three other students. We all decided to make use of our miniscule kitchen and make our own turkey dinner. Each of us chose part of the meal to work on; I got the turkey and stuffing. My grandmother write down her special stuffing recipe, and my roommates and I went to the supermarket for all the necessary ingredients. We invited a few friends who weren't heading home for the holiday either, and before daybreak on Thanksgiving Day, I was wide awake, sautéeing onions for stuffing and doing homework while I basted the turkey.
