How do you know when it's too cold to hang your laundry on your outdoor clothesline?  It's starting to get to that point in the year when I wonder about these things. Is there going to be enough sunlight, as well as no precipitation, to get the laundry dry on any given day?  And am I going to be home at the right time in the afternoon to get the laundry down before it gets too dark to find the clothesline?

I've concluded that it's not a good idea to hang laundry outside when:

  • it's below freezing.  Your shirts will freeze into sheets of ice.
  • it's so chilly that when you hang up a load of laundry that was washed in cold water, steam comes off the clothes.
  • it's so foggy that the clothesline is wetter than the clothes you're hanging on it.
  • sleet is bouncing off the clothes that are drying on the line.
  • you have to wear gloves to take down the dry clothes.
  • three of your neighbors are using their fireplaces, so your clothes come off the line smelling like Boy Scout Camp.

Sure, it costs more to run the dryer than it does to hang clothes outside, but there is a benefit to running the dryer in the winter.  There's nothing like opening up that dryer that has just buzzed to signal the end of the cycle, and having that blast of toasty warm air go through the basement.  And bath towels right out of the dryer?  Perfect on a chilly morning.
