Leaked Black Friday Ads Heavy on Home Electronics
By Doug Desjardins
With Black Friday just one week away, word is leaking out on what various retailers will be offering for their annual door-buster sales.
Though the importance of Black Friday has been watered down this year by the slate of pre-Black Friday sales, they still carry plenty of weight and –if nothing else – are an event in themselves that still generate early-morning crowds. As always, this year’s sales are heavy on home entertainment, toys and appliances.
Target is offering a 40-inch Westinghouse 1080p LCD TV for just $298, marked down from a regular price of $550, along with a Sony wireless Blu-Ray player for just $99. Target is also offering a Canon SX120 10MP camera for $129 and a Nikon S205 12MP camera for just $79.
Best Buy is also making high definition TVs its tent-pole items with a 42-inch Insignia plasma TV for $369 (down from a regular $470) and a 46-inch Panasonic plasma for $499, more than $100 off the regular price. Best Buy is also featuring a Toshiba BDX 1100 Blu Ray player for just $59.99.
Toys “R” Us is making electronics a big part of its Black Friday promotion as well. It’s giving away at free $50 gift card with the purchase of any 8GB iPod Touch ($229) or a 16GB iPod Touch ($299). Toys "R" Us is also selling Android Tablets for just $139 in what’s expected to be a limited-supply offer.
The toy retailers will also be selling My First Trampoline for just $49.99 and Fisher Price medical kits for $6.49. All Toys “R” Us stores are getting an early start on Black Friday and starting sales at 10 p.m. Thanksgiving night.
Wal-Mart is loading its Black Friday sales slate with plenty of home electronics and few popular toys. The leaked ad for Wal-Mart features a 42-inch Emerson LCD TV for $398, a 42-inch LG 1080 LCD TV for $478, a Hewlett-Packard 15.6-inch laptop computer with a 250GB hard drive for $298 and a select number of DVDS for $1 each.
Wal-Mart is also featuring toys like ZhuZhu Pet toy hamsters for $4, Barbie dolls for $5 and children’s apparel for $4.
Though the leaked ads are always interesting – and raise the question of whether they are really leaked or just floated by retailers to gauge customer reaction – recent trends are stealing some of the thunder from Black Friday sales. Retailers like Sears, Kmart and Best Buy have been staging “Pre-Black Friday” sales on a weekly basis since the last weekend of October, making the Friday after Thanksgiving less of a sales event than it’s been in past years.
