Raise your hand if you're cooking Thanksgiving dinner this year. My hand's up!
Thanksgiving is one of the Top Three Delicious Holidays,
along with Halloween and Valentine's Day. And it's only one week away, so it's time to really get busy with the planning and the shopping and maybe even the cooking-ahead.
My sister and I have been trading tips for making mashed potatoes in the crockpot. I tried this for the first time last weekend, because I didn't want to risk using a new technique for the first time when I had six guests to feed, as well as my own family of five. Later today I'll head to the grocery store and get my turkey. There wasn't room to put a 20-pound turkey in my freezer, and I know it's going to take about a week to defrost. Yes, I'm buying a 20-pound turkey for 11 people. The rule of thumb may be one pound of turkey per person, but I want lots of leftovers.
Now I have to make sure I have enough dinnerware, serving platters, and knives and forks to accommodate my guests. I've already arranged to borrow a folding table from my neighbor. Finally, it's time to make the shopping and cooking lists, and actually plan out what's going to hit the stove at what time. Because there's nothing worse at Thanksgiving than cold mashed potatoes and overcooked broccoli. My goal is to have all the hot food hot at the same time.
