Murphy's Law strikes again: a newspaper left in the back seat of the car where a child can find it will be open to the one page the child shouldn't see.
Case in point: last week I took my husband's car to basketball practice to pick up Mr. Third Grader and his friend, a teammate who lives down the street. As the boys got into the car, they found a two-week-old copy of The Wall Street Journal back there. They started tussling over the paper.
"Cool, a newspaper!"
"There's no sports section in there, guys," I told them, figuring there couldn't possibly be anything in The Wall Street Journal that would interest two eight-year-olds.
I was wrong.
"Yes, there is," they told me. Then they read the headline: "First Baseman Aubrey Huff Wears Glitter-Flecked Underwear for Luck." Much giggling ensued. I'm sure the story was all over the school bus the next morning, because this is the kind of thing third-graders can't learn from reading the sports section of the regular newspaper.
