This past weekend, the sports fans in my family were all sorely disappointed.

On Friday night, my mom's beloved Yankees lost their bid to be a World Series team this year.  Baseball is now over for her for the year.  She wasn't even interested in watching the Phillies-Giants matchup on Saturday night, choosing instead the movie The Sandlot, because at least a movie like that will make you feel good about baseball.

Saturday afternoon's Notre Dame football game was a big disappointment.  Not only did the Irish lose, they lost badly.    I spent six hours in transit on Saturday so I could see that game in person with my dad; we enjoyed being there, but football games are unquestionably much more fun when your team wins--or the score is at least close.

And then Mr. Third Grader's hopes were dashed when the Phillies lost their chance to be in the World Series.  He's still wearing his division-champs T-shirt, because we don't raise fair-weather fans in my house.  We won't even talk about what the Eagles did on Sunday afternoon.

At least I know that someone's going to be happy with their favorite team's performance this week:  Monday Night Football pitted the Giants against the Cowboys--or my sister's family's team versus my brother's family's team.  I'm sure there was plenty of trash talk all weekend about that game!
