I remember all those trips my dad would take to bring me home from college for vacations. It was a two-hour car ride each way, through some of the most beautiful country of northeastern Pennsylvania. At this time of year, those rides provided views of particularly lovely scenery.
Now my own son is on college, and I've spent several Friday afternoons on the road, going to pick him up at school to come home for the weekend. But unlike those trips through northern New Jersey and Pennsylvania, I'm spending almost the entire trip on the city streets of Philadelphia--and we're not talking about the "gentrified" neighborhoods. Instead of farms, cows, and mountains, I see bars on windows, abandoned buildings and people sitting at bus stops.
As long as it's not rush hour, I've started not to mind the drive. There's only two terrifying left turns that I have to navigate, and the rest of the time, the trip is fairly pleasant. And I have to say that the more time I spend driving in the city, the more I'm intrigued by city life. There's something exciting about being in a close-knit neighborhood, where you can walk to school, church, shopping and social events.
If only I didn't have to parallel park on those narrow city streets, it would be all good!
