My dad has been an avid bicyclist since I was a kid, so I grew up only knowing about bikes that were built to go the distance. As in, 75 miles on a single Sunday morning.
Since I only have experience with the kind of bikes that required the rider to hunch over the handlebars, I'm mystified by my daughter's request that her next bike be a "beach bike."
One speed. Coaster brakes. Shiny fenders. When I was a kid, we couldn't wait to leave bikes like that behind along with the training wheels that usually came with them.
Whenever I see a beach bike, it's being piloted by someone who is pedaling so slowly that I'm impressed at their ability to balance a bicycle that is barely moving. If I can walk faster than you can ride your bike, what's the point of riding?
Her younger brother wants no part of those slow bikes. He can't wait until he grows into the bike that's waiting for him in the garage. It has hand brakes! A ten-speed will not be very far behind.
