After nearly 21 years, our toaster seems to finally toasted its last slice. It doesn't owe us anything,
and it was kind of a relief to replace it, since 21 years ago they weren't making toasters with slots wide enough to toast bagels.
So I found a deal and bought a new toaster at a great price. It's shiny. It doesn't have any English-muffin crumbs clogging it up. I'm going to enjoy that while it lasts, because around here, the toaster is a pretty busy appliance.
Mr. Third Grader loves toast. Every morning before school he eats two waffles and four pieces of toast. Every morning I think of Aretha Franklin in The Blues Brothers: "You want butter or jam on that toast?"
(For the record, he always wants butter.)
He's fascinated by the new toaster, since it not only makes a very loud noise when the toast pops up, but the bread nearly jumps out of the slots! That's always good for an early-morning laugh.
Our other laugh is reserved for the fact that we've had this toaster for a full week already and my husband has yet to notice the difference. I've sworn Mr. Third Grader to secrecy; now the game is to see how long it takes Daddy to figure out that this is not the toaster he bought for his very first apartment 21 years ago.
