Twelve years ago, we moved into our present home.  It was early fall, and we received "landscaping" gifts from my sister and two of my great-aunts.

My sister gave us a small lilac tree that I was thrilled to plant in front of my living-room window, since lilacs make me think of childhood days spent at my grandmother's house.  She had lilac trees lined up all along one side of her yard.  Over the years, the lilac has bloomed and thrived, and it's beautiful every single spring.

Unfortunately, we weren't so lucky with the gift from my great-aunts.  They brought us an absolutely huge potted chrysanthemum.  It had bright yellow flowers and looked great in the flower bed right by the front door.  And as long as I left it in the pot, everything was fine.

But no--I couldn't leave well-enough alone.  I had to take that big plant out of the pot and plant it in that flower bed.  And that's when the neighborhood bunnies decided that I'd catered their lunch.  I returned from a daytime errand to find a family of bunnies feasting at the Chrysanthemum Buffet.  They didn't leave any blooms on the plant at all, and by the next day, they'd munched the stems down to about an inch off the ground.

So much for the mums.  I resist buying them every fall, no matter how beautiful they look in the garden-center displays!
