The bad thing about laptop computers is that you can use them anywhere. And it's never just a laptop around here. It's notebooks, pencils, textbooks and highlighters. 
My older son used to litter his desk with all the stuff he needed for school, as well as the bag of pretzels, multiple loose CDs, guitar picks and empty Dr. Pepper cans. He was doing his homework at a desktop computer, and while the desk didn't look pretty, at least everything was contained.
Now he and his sister have laptops for school. They don't feel tied to a desk anymore. In fact, neither of them works at a desk at all. Instead, they park themselves on the living-room couches and cover the coffee table with their stuff. And then they take their laptops out of the living room and leave all the rest of their messes behind.
In some ways, I miss that whole "tied down to a desk" thing.
