Mom always said that a good breakfast is the best way to start the day.  I'm a big fan of breakfast myself, so there'll be no argument from me on that score.

I'm no short-order cook, though.  If my kids want more than toast or instant oatmeal, they've got to prepare it themselves.  And that has led to some pretty interesting breakfasts.

When Mr. Third Grader was only about three or four, he'd sniff out the tuna salad that I was making for the Big Kids' lunch sandwiches and demand a tuna sandwich for breakfast.  How could I say no?  If tuna sandwiches are nutritious enough for lunch, then they must be nutritious enough for breakfast.

But tuna breath on a preschooler at 7 in the morning is rather nauseating, to say the least.

Fortunately, he's moved on to waffles and toast as his breakfast of choice on most mornings.  But Miss Freshman is exploring some weird food preferences these days; she takes a container of Special K cereal to school for her lunch and eats what would be considered "lunch food" for breakfast.  Sometimes that's leftovers from last night's dinner; sometimes it's yogurt and fruit; sometimes it's even a tuna sandwich.

You're not going to catch me eating one of those for breakfast, though.  Pass the Grape-Nuts.
