The third-grade-boy set is big into birthday cards all of a sudden. They're carrying around their binders and folders and shoeboxes with cards inside, showing off their prized pictures and trading with their friends. 
My own third-grader is very proud of his card collection, which he's been working on since July--quite a long-term interest for an eight-year-old. And when he found that he had a replica card for a famous player from my mom's era, he generously offered to give it to his grandmother, the ultimate baseball fan.
I'm tripping over piles and boxes and albums full of baseball cards no matter where I walk in the family room if Mr. Third-Grader has friends over.
One boy left his card album on the couch, and I suggested that he move it so the cards wouldn't get bent. "Or someone hurts their butt," he added as he put his album on the table.
