To me, a "sweeper" is something that cleans crumbs off the carpet. But Mr. Third Grader spent half his summer watching World
Cup Soccer, and I think the vuvuzelas got to him. He loves soccer all of a sudden. He'll spend hours in the yard, hopping around his soccer ball and practicing his "slide tackle" (even though it's an illegal move for kids in his age group).
The kids in U10 soccer are starting to learn their positions, and Mr. Third Grader's coach is diligent about showing the players where they should be on the field. He's trying hard to break them of the habit they developed in the early-elementary soccer league: playing as a pack.
Now that is funny to watch. Depending on the size of the team (and the amount of fear the coach has of parents who may make things ugly if their kid doesn't play enough), there can be up to twenty little kids running around after the ball, with two goalies standing still inside the goal area. Referees routinely stop the game so somebody's parent can run out onto the field and tie a child's shoes. And at the end of the game, everybody's a winner, since there are juice boxes and bags of chips awaiting all the players.
