In addition to wearing a school uniform, my daughter is required to wear uniform shoes. Every single girl in her school
wears the exact same shoes. The only way to personalize these shoes in any way is to put a penny in the little slot at the top of the loafer. Thinking she was being original, my daughter decided to do that.
Less than a week after school started, I got a text message after her field-hockey practice. "My shoes are gone." Apparently all the girls who stayed after school for sports had put their backpacks, equipment and shoes on some picnic tables, and someone picked up Miss Freshman's shoes instead of her own. So my daughter, one of the last ones at the table, took the one pair of shoes that had been left behind. Those shoes had pennies too.
They're a size too big for her, which doesn't seem to bother her in the least. I keep telling her that it would be a good idea to hang up a sign in the girls' locker room, because somewhere in her school, there's a girl limping around in shoes one size too small. "That's her own fault," my daughter informed me. "She was stupid enough to take someone else's shoes." That's harsh!
