Over Labor Day weekend, my neighbors invited me and Mr. Third Grader to join them at an "Oktoberfest" in Philadelphia.  The promise of German food and live music was enough to get me to say yes.

It was definitely worth the trip (and the admission fee.)   We found more than just good food and music to entertain us; there were carnival rides for the kids, a craft fair to browse, and even German folk dancing.

Mr. Third Grader can't hear music without going into motion, so he kept creeping closer and closer to the dance floor.  That was fine during "open dance" time, but I had to keep my eye on him when they moved into the performances by different folk-dance groups.  Some of the dancers waiting their turn admired his attempts to imitate their "dance moves."

And then there were the costumes.  You could buy lederhosen at the craft fair, as well as dirndls and dresses for girls and ribboned headbands.  There were even fancy socks--for the guys!  Some had stripes on top, some had vines creeping up the backs of the legs.  In some cases, the socks were the most elaborate part of the outfit.  The girls, though, just wore white stockings.   There was talk of going as Oktoberfest dancers for Halloween among the kids in our crowd, but by the time we returned to the craft fair, all the clothing had been put away.  Maybe next year!
