Last week a friend of mine called me from her new home in Florida.  I knew she'd have a story to tell, but I wasn't banking on this one.

Since they've got over an acre of land at their new place, her family has decided that they could get some animals.  While most families choose a dog, cat, or guinea pig, my friend's family has gone a different route:  they bought chickens.

They converted a backyard shed on the property into a chicken coop, and got a couple of roosters plus numerous baby chicks.  Their daughters love feeding and playing with the chickens, and for the most part, the chickens seem quite happy in their new environment.

All except for the rooster.  Even though he has more than an acre to roam around in, plus a roomy shed where he can hide from those pop-up thundershowers on Florida afternoons, he just doesn't want to be there.  Every chance he gets, my friend told me, he goes and hides in the neighbors' yard.

Maybe he's figured out what my friend's daughters have not:  those chickens aren't pets.  They're a future Kung Pao dinner.
