One of my favorite things about the "Oktoberfest in September" that I visited last week was the music.  You can't help but clap along to the cheery music of an oompah band.

Most of the time, as we explored the festival, we heard traditional German music and even some polkas.  The "Pennsylvania Polka" seemed to be a popular choice, since the festival was located in Philadelphia.  The kids in our group showed off their knowledge by identifying the instruments that were being used.  The only one that tripped them up stumped the adults as well:  the euphonium, which looks like a smaller-scale tuba.

After everyone danced "The Chicken Dance," the band broke into yet another familiar party tune.  At first I didn't think anything of it, since party songs are fairly universal.  Then I realized that the oompah band was playing "YMCA!"  Even without the words, all the kids knew what to do.

Then the music got more mellow, and as we continued our game of "Name that Oompah Tune" we heard the band cover "Take Me Home, Country Roads."  Only in America...
