We've had one of those impossible puzzles in the living room for a good year and a half now. It's called 36 Cube and the object of the puzzle is to line up the colors so that no row or column has more than one of any single color in it.
It's harder than it looks, since the pieces vary in length and the top of the puzzle must be even in height when it's solved correctly.
It's a good puzzle to have around when kids and teenagers come over, because they're instantly drawn to try to solve this puzzle.
My husband worked at it every night for a week, even attempting to write an algorithm in Excel to figure out a solution. (That didn't work.) Other, less-scientific approaches, didn't work either.
But when a couple of my daughter's friends came over and found out that no one had figured out this puzzle in the 18 months we'd owned it, they decided to take on the challenge.
That lasted less than five minutes before they grabbed someone's laptop and googled the solution to the puzzle. Then they lined up the pieces in the order described on the website they found.
When I accused them of cheating, they replied, "This isn't cheating. We're using a help code."
