At the beginning of the school year, the high school hosted a freshman dance during the freshman parents' meeting.  After our meeting was over, all the parents headed to the school's courtyard to pick up our kids and take them home. I ran into a bunch of parents whose kids had been in class with my daughter since kindergarten, and we all admired our kids' school-dance attire--we're used to seeing them in school uniforms all the time.

One young lady looked particularly nice that night, with a cool, pretty sundress and tasteful makeup.  As I complimented this girl's mom on how nice her daughter looked, we both remembered my daughter's first-grade birthday party.

It was a tea party, and my daughter wanted all her guests to dress up nicely for the party.  I had purchased little bracelets, hair accessories, and nail polish to use for prizes for the games we'd play.  And this girl wanted nothing to do with all of that.  Her mom called to RSVP for the party, asking if it was mandatory for the guests to wear dresses--because her daughter didn't want any part of wearing a dress.  She came to the party in a nice pants outfit but refused to even touch the bottle of nail polish that came her way after she won a game.  (I found her an alternate prize).

Her mom and I had a good laugh after that freshman dance, remembering this episode from long ago.  My daughter's friend had grown up into a beautiful young woman, who is just as comfortable in soccer shorts as she is in a sundress.
