My teenagers go through earbuds at an alarming rate. Yes, they use their music players quite often, so it's not like they don't get pulled out several times a day. 
But I can't understand how those wires get so tangled in such a short time.
I roll up my earbuds after I use them and keep them in my iPod case--and even those get tangled up. So I can't blame the kids. It seems that no matter how you treat those earbuds, they're going to tangle.
Unfortunately, I think that all that knotting and unknotting of wires has to be hard on them. It seems like one or the other of my teens is always shopping for new earbuds. It's gotten to the point where I start to look for sales and then encourage my kids to stock up.
Maybe I should just buy the things in bulk--or tell the kids to save their money and invest in a wireless pair. No more tangles!
