The upscale supermarket in a nearby upscale zip code is a foodie's paradise. But it's hell on someone who has to live within a grocery budget.
I quickly realized that shopping there every week wasn't going to work out well. Yes, we'd be eating great, but that money has to come from somewhere. Besides, I was way tempted by the gourmet-cookware section, which has every gadget known to chefs, and amazing-looking pots and pans. We won't even talk about the stoneware. 
But it wasn't long before I discovered that the mile-long cheese counter and the cookware section mentioned above were stealing shelf space from the kind of stuff I look for in grocery stores, like canned gravy and my favorite brand of laundry detergent.
I do still visit that grocery store occasionally, to get those hard-to-find "international" ingredients, delicious produce and even the overpriced but fabulous pastries. The bulk of my shopping, though, is done at the definitely-not-upscale supermarket right in my own neighborhood. They've got most of what I need, and outside of the Hostess cupcake aisle, not too many temptations.
