For a whole week in the summer, there are no arguments about what we'll be watching on TV. No one's fighting with a sibling (or parent) about whether a Netflix movie should take precedence over that Nickelodeon sitcom, Sponge Bob cartoon, or baseball game.
I love Shark Week for just that reason.
I don't watch the programs, since they're often pretty gruesome. But my kids love them. They're glued to the TV as celebrities swim with sharks, learning about different types of sharks and what (and who) these sharks like to eat.
Year after year, I've seen my kids stop everything when Shark Week comes along. I'm amazed at the power of these fascinating animals to grab the attention of my entire family, especially given their diversity in age.
It's not often that I encourage my kids to park it in front of the TV, but I know that during Shark Week they're learning--because they talk about what they learn. At dinner. Sometimes it makes me lose my appetite, but it's great to see everyone engaged in the same subject matter, even if it is only for a week.
