I don't know how my son found out about this, but he found a way to combine his interest in music with his ability to build stuff. He's been making his own didgeridoos.
He has at least four of them now, in addition to the ones he sold to friends. And they're not just sitting around the house where I can trip over them or be annoyed by the constant droning hum. Instead, he brought them to the community theater where he's a summer intern in the orchestra. In this week's show, he's playing banjo, mandolin, harmonica and didgeridoo.
Not having any bamboo around, he used lengths of PVC pipe to create these instruments. He grew bored with the plain white pipe, so he began painting designs on the tubes as well. Then his sister used some polar fleece that was sitting around the basement to make no-sew "socks" for the pipes, which range in length from three to five feet, depending on tone.
So, is it a musical instrument or a family art project? Either way, it kept both of them busy on a rainy summer day.
