Throughout my childhood I'd hear the commercials on radio and TV. "226-0841, the Pocono Gardens Lodge!" Apparently in the 1970s and '80s, it was the place to go for your honeymoon.
Those were some powerful commercials, since all those years later, the phone number for a now-defunct honeymoon resort has stuck with me. When I'm senile, I'll probably still be able to dial the Pocono Gardens Lodge--I hope they've retired that number.
Not being skiers, my husband and I didn't visit one of those Pocono honeymoon palaces for our January honeymoon (there was snow to spare in northern NJ and PA that year!) But later that summer we gave in to the hype and scheduled a weekend getaway in the Pocono mountains.
I don't know if we just made a poor choice of destination or if all the resorts were like that, but we were seriously underwhelmed by the honeymoon resort we visited. It looked like it had last been decorated in 1974, with red shag carpeting covering the floors, walls, and even the ceiling! Then you had the Awkward Dining Room Experience--there were no tables for two in this honeymoon palace. Instead, you had to sit with two or three other couples, and never the same people twice. Did I mention that was awkward? We did get a good laugh, however, out of the warning signs posted all over the in-room spa: Do not add bubble bath to hot tub. We guessed some other honeymooners had to find out about that one the hard way.
