It feels like the World Cup 2010 has been going on for centuries now. My eight-year-old is absolutely addicted to it. Though I've successfully avoided signing him up for soccer up until now
(making me the only mom of an eight-year-old in this zip code who didn't have her child in soccer), that's all over. It's all he can talk about. He's looking forward to getting cleats and shin guards and getting out there on the field.
In the meantime, he's watching SportsCenter and keeping me more than up-to-date on a sport in which I have no interest at all. When I took him for a haircut last week, we couldn't leave the house until a crucial overtime goal was scored. He was happy to find that the barbershop had a TV tuned to the same match, and proceeded to update the barbers on the scores of the other teams that had played earlier that day.
It was pretty tempting to let him spend the entire afternoon at the barbershop, talking soccer with a middle-aged barber who's been coaching the sport in this town for at least two decades. Not only would he get to chat with someone who actually knew something about the game, but I'd be liberated from the maddening buzz of the vuvuzela.
