My older son has figured out a way to combine his interests in music and building stuff.

Somewhere on the internet he found an article on how to make a homemade didgeridoo. He already has two guitars, an electric bass, a mandolin and my banjo (which I despair of ever getting back!)  Fortunately, didgeridoos are cheap to make.

These Australian aboriginal instruments are one-note wonders that are traditionally made of wood.  But you can get the same effect from a properly-cut piece of PVC pipe and a mouthpiece molded from beeswax.

The beeswax was a little hard to come by, but it was easy enough to get a length of PVC pipe form our local Big Box Giant Home-Improvement Warehouse.  He sanded down the pipe and asked a friend to paint designs on the outside of it.  But since a didgeridoo only plays a single note, its use is rather limited.

He solved that problem by returning to the store and buying three more pieces of pipe.  By cutting each of them to a different (and precise) length, he had a total of four different musical notes at his disposal.

Then the Boy Scouts got wind of this project.  Several of his fellow Scouts offered to buy the homemade didgeridoos.  My son made a tidy profit (enough to buy the gas to get around for a week) and is encouraging the boys to use the instruments at camp this summer.
