You never know when your kid's toys will come in handy.
My neighbor
found that out one recent summer when he had a big crowd over for a backyard picnic. His little girl had an easel that they kept out on the back porch so she could draw and paint without making a mess in the house.
At this picnic, though, it served an entirely different purpose.
Borrowing a page from fine sidewalk cafés everywhere, a friend of the family decided to use the little easel as a menu board. He took more than a few liberties with the actual menu offerings, however, presenting a menu that featured such picnic favorites as "bat wings" and "big dogs."
It did not, however, list the day's special event: a Twinkie-eating contest. Aspiring grade-school-age competitive eaters from all over the Delaware Valley participated in this one-time-only event. There was no age restriction for the contest--kids were the only ones who were willing to give it a try. Afterward, my daughter declared that she'd never eat a Twinkie again.
