Our backyard pool is "Swim Cap Optional." I've never asked anyone to wear one, no matter how long their hair is. 
Apparently, though, the boy down the street likes to accessorize when he goes swimming. The last time he showed up here looking to beat the heat with a splash in our pool, he ran up the street wearing his swim trunks and flip-flops.
He also wore a hat. Not the typical baseball cap that an eight-year-old boy might wear on a hot day, however. This hat was so unique that I nearly forgot to begin my usual interrogation of kids who show up to swim in the pool:
- Do your grownups know you're here?
- Do you have a towel?
- Do you have your goggles?
I can honestly say that I have never before seen anyone pair swim trunks and a beret before. Especially a knitted beret--in the July heat. Clearly, it was an "I dressed myself today" moment.
To my credit, I managed not to laugh until after I'd directed my young neighbor to the backyard where Mr. Third Grader was already cannonballing into the pool.
