Last week my daughter spent the afternoon at a local mall with her friends. I've learned that when she's out of the house, it's best to make sure that I take my cell phone out of my purse where it usually lives and keep it with me. 
That's because a kid who barely wants to speak to me when we're in the same house (or car) suddenly wants to be in frequent contact.
I'm not going to discourage that, but sometimes it does get exasperating.
She texted me that day because she had bought some shorts at a store where she'd never shopped before. She'd found a great clearance sale on some cute summer clothes (this is a great time for that, by the way!) But this particular store has its very own sizing system; it doesn't follow the American system where Junior sizes are odd numbers.
Without trying them on, she purchased a pair of shorts from a store where she didn't know how the sizes work. And it wasn't until after she left the store that she decided to check with me about that.
After a series of back-and-forth text messages (in which I encouraged her to just find a mall restroom and try the shorts on, so she could return them if they didn't fit) I finally decided to google the store's size chart list and see if we could figure out the American size equivalent. The shorts turned out to be within one size of her usual size, so she decided to just take the risk and keep them, trying them on at home to see if they fit.
She was lucky--this time. But I still think it would have been smarter to try the shorts on at the store!
