When the weather's good, there's a nightly baseball game in the backyard that borders ours.

Our neighbor, a dad of two, is in charge of this game. He takes the roles of pitcher, coach, umpire and color commentator.  And according to Mr. Third Grader, there's quite the variety of specialty pitches for this game:

  • Shnuckle ball
  • Curve ball
  • Changeup
  • Toilet ball
  • Submarine ball
  • Knuckle ball
  • Doughnut ball
  • Fast ball
  • Screw ball

Even though there are only three or four kids playing this game, they manage to sort out teams and set up fielders, pinch runners, and whatever else they need for a killer game of baseball.  First base is the clothesline, second base is the big tree, and third base is the swingset.  Home plate is just a spot in the grass, which makes the whole tagging-out-at-home thing a little complicated.  But it's always lots of fun!
