Earlier this week, my college-bound son and I spent a day at the university he'll be attending this fall. The orientation session for students and parents included tours, lectures, meet-and-greets, and lots and lots of papers and forms to take home.
One paper we received was the always-handy "what to bring to the dorm" list. The university had broken down this list into three categories: Items that students SHOULD bring to college, "Luxury" items that students OFTEN bring to college, and PROHIBITED items.
While we were happy to find out what kind of sheets we should buy for my son's dorm room (the beds are Twin XL, so his feet won't be hanging off the edge of the bed anymore), we've had the most fun with the list of things he may not bring to school. There are some interesting items on that list, and we're quite sure that this is the kind of list that was made up as the university discovered just what some students were including in those foot lockers they hauled into the dorms on move-in day. So here's what he can't bring to school:
- Air conditioners
- Amplifiers for musical instruments
- Archery equipment
- Bodybuilding equipment
- Candles or incense
- Cooking appliances with open heating elements; electric skillets
- Darts
- Fireworks
- Pets
- Radio transmitters
- Sun lamps
- Waterbeds
- Weapons or replicas
That was good to know, and even better to mock. It looks to us like they're discriminating against Boy Scouts, since he can't bring his bow and arrow, and we're wondering if his Boy Scout knife and multi-tool count as "weapons"--there was that one incident when an Eagle Scout was suspended from high school because his Scout knife (kept in his car) violated the school's zero-tolerance weapons policy.
