For a few weeks there, my dryer was making a very loud noise. The dryer's in the basement, but I could hear it anywhere in the house. You'd know the dryer was done when the noise stopped.
When I called the repair shop to see about having the dryer fixed, I was asked to describe the kind of noise it's making. "It sounds like there are about a dozen shoes in the dryer, banging around as it tumbles," I said, and the repairman replied that he thought he knew what the problem was.
He didn't tell me to stop using the dryer, and since it was drying the clothes just fine, I kept on using it until the repairman arrived, took the dryer apart, and told me that it was "decommissioned."
Apparently, in addition to needing a new part (as the repairman had suspected), the dryer had been on fire at some point. I never knew. He figured that, since there was no evidence outside the dryer that there had been a fire in there.
Yikes.
The repairman replaced the part and made sure that the vent was unobstructed before allowing me to use the dryer again. And now it purrs like a kitten. It's so quiet I don't even know it's on--which means I don't know when it's done!
