On hot days like today, my kids will come home from school complaining that the community pool is not yet open on weekdays.

That's OK; I'll wait.  The thought of dragging everyone and all their stuff to and from that pool isn't exactly appetizing to me--Mom, Chauffeur, Finder of All Lost Things, and Auxiliary Lifeguard.

It's the Finder of All Lost Things part that really gets to me.   Since I don't usually swim, it falls to me to keep an eye on everybody's stuff.  That means I'm always asked to account for towels, t-shirts, flip-flops and the elusive goggles.

I can't believe how many pairs of goggles my kids manage to lose in the course of every single summer.  They insist that they "need" goggles to go swimming in the pool, but when they want to go off the diving board, the lifeguards forbid them to wear the goggles.  So their goggles join the heap of goggles sitting near the ladder to the high dive--and I'm really not sure what happens to them after that.  They never seem to make it back to our swim bag at that point.

I start out each summer absolutely obsessive over the goggles.  There's a small mesh bag that I clip onto the swim bag, and as soon as the kids come out of the water I make them dump their goggles in there.  But that method lasts about a week, as the lure of the diving board appears to be stronger than the wrath of Mom.

I'm thinking it's time for a new rule this summer:  if you're a loser, you pay for the goggles.  That goes for flip-flops too.
