My husband can normally tolerate a fairly extreme level of household messiness.  That's generally a good thing, because a good amount of what gets left all over the place around here is his stuff.  There is Cub Scout paraphernalia and equipment in at least three different rooms, including the basement office/music room, where there are two boxes and three reusable shopping bags full of my previous attempts to contain it.

But every once in a while he decides to go on a decluttering mission, and the first stuff he attacks is always the stuff that belongs to other people.

His latest target is my book collection.

My tactic, "They're not books; they're a decorating statement" isn't working.  When I was a grad student, I once attended a party at another student's home.  There were bookshelves everywhere, in nearly every room of the house--all built-in.  I don't think they ever got rid of books in that household; they just built another shelf.

My husband doesn't want me to live that dream.  He wants as many books as possible out of the house, and he's in no hurry for any more to come in.  To that end, he has offered to buy me the e-reader of my choice, if I would pledge only to buy ebooks in the future.

So far I haven't taken him up on it.  I've chosen, instead, to retaliate by nagging him about all the Cub Scout stuff strewn all over the place in three different rooms.  At least my books are neatly contained on bookshelves--most of them, anyway.
