Until very recently, my husband used to hit the road for a business trip shortly after Father's Day each year. Some years, we'd spend Father's Day afternoon packing his suitcase. So we'd kick off the summer by spending the week missing Daddy.
I don't know what it is that gives me an uncontrollable urge to rearrange furniture every time my husband travels. Maybe it's passive-aggressive behavior on my part--like the way cats "punish" their owners for a few extra hours of abandonment by depositing hairballs on the dry-clean-only bedspreads.
My husband likes to have everything in the same place. If I move things around in the kitchen, I have to make sure to keep the silverware, plates, glasses, and coffee in the same spot. He doesn't like it when he can't find those essentials.
I, on the other hand, get tired of a room always looking the same. Rearranging the furniture is an absolutely free way to change up the entire look of a room. So he would come home from a trip to find that I'd relocated the couch, TV, toy box and his desk.
Earlier this month we purchased a new living-room set. I learned that taking my teenage daughter along to the furniture store wasn't the wisest choice in terms of sticking to the budget--she talked me (and her dad) into adding a "chair and a half" to the set. That meant my desk had to be evicted from the living room.
I didn't think my husband would mind. He's complained for years about my desk in the living room and how it makes the room look "cluttered." So when my teenage son and I relocated the desk to the family room, I thought he'd be happy.
WRONG!
He told me I wouldn't last a week with it down here, and that I should put the desk in the bedroom. "Would you like to work where you sleep?" I argued.
While I agree that the noise (and Nerf basketballs) in the family room has proven to be a challenge, it hasn't been all bad. Who knows? I may not be done arranging that living room, and I may yet find another place up there to stash my desk.
