We recently hosted a huge potluck picnic for 20 Cub Scouts and their families. Potluck dinners are not without their moments of panic, and this one was no exception.
There are four different groups within Cub Scouts, organized by age, and we had assigned different items to each group. The Tigers (first-graders) brought beverages and ice, Wolves (second-graders) contributed salad, Bears (third-graders) brought chips and pretzels, and Webelos (fourth- and fifth-graders) were responsible for dessert.
We let everyone know a few days before the event that the guest list had grown to almost 90 people.
And that's when the panic started.
It's hard to guess how much food 90 people will need. We served about that many at the Blue and Gold dinner this past March, but we expected only 70--so we ran out of food. Granted, those 20 surprise guests messed up our system, but we didn't want that to happen again.
So when one family showed up with ONE bottle of soda as their contribution to the 90-guest potluck, I allowed myself to secretly panic.
Sure enough, before dessert was served, all the soda was gone. Yes, other families brought some drinks, but it was a hot day. I almost had to make a run to the supermarket to get more to drink.
Then I remembered that the Boy Scouts have one of those five-gallon coolers in the troop room. We sent some Scouts to fill the cooler with ice water and we were in business.
