A week ago, I spent a very hot day on a field trip to the Philadelphia Zoo with my son's class.

These kids are old pros at the zoo. They visited it for their Pre-K, kindergarten, and first-grade field trips, so this is the fourth or fifth time they've seen it as part of a school group--not counting all the times they've gone with their families or friends.  I'm an old pro as well--I've ridden more school buses than I'd care to think about to the zoo, since I've also accompanied the older kids on their class trips to the same place.

I've seen that same pair of giraffes countless times, and I know the location of every restroom in the entire place without need for a map or signs.

The kids kept themselves busy on this field trip to a very familiar location by borrowing their parents' digital cameras.  While it was a little nerve-wracking to hand over the camera to someone who can't hold his zoo ticket in his hand for three minutes without dropping it four times, I let him take pictures too.  Most of them are kind of blurry--but then again, most of the time he's kind of blurry.  He's just not a stand-still kind of kid.

Once or twice he consented to handing back the camera so I could take his picture near some of the animals.  Our favorite is this shot of him with the penguin, who almost looks like he's whispering in my son's ear.
