Bill Cosby once said, "Fatherhood is pretending the gift you love most is soap-on-a-rope."
It seems that Father's Day gifts are always the butt of jokes, whether they come in the form of garish ties, ugly sweaters, tools, fishing poles or soap-on-a-rope.
And Father's Day greeting cards seem to assume that dads enjoy only the following activities: fishing, golfing, building stuff, mowing the lawn, cooking on the grill, and drinking beer. That's it. That's all dads do, if the greeting-card industry is to be believed.
I have yet to find a Father's Day card with a Boy Scout leader or a computer (for my husband) or a bicyclist (for my dad). While I haven't gone card shopping yet this year, I don't expect that things will be any different.
However, I have made sure that the dads in my life will not be receiving any ties, sweaters, fishing poles or even soap-on-a-rope. The plan around here is to take my husband out to dinner with all the kids. He wants to go to Outback Steakhouse, his favorite restaurant. We got him a couple of gifts as well, making sure that they were things he likes--not things we wish he'd like!
