My daughter is never without her cell phone. It goes everywhere she goes. 
And the phone looks like it's been run over by a car (or a tractor-trailer) after 18 months of near-constant use. It turns off spontaneously--sometimes in the middle of a text message. And the "vibrate" mode no longer works. It's ringtone or nothing at this point.
I think it's the text-messaging that is really killing the phone. Cell phones were not built to be used exclusively as texting devices. I think my daughter, who is always using her phone, actually talks on the phone about 15 minutes per month.
But on Friday, as we stood with other parents watching our kids say goodbye to each other after graduation, as if they'd never see each other again, we discussed just how connected these kids are. They all have phones and they all use facebook. They all know what everyone had for breakfast this morning--they're constantly in touch. So I think it will be easier for them to stay connected to their friends, even when they head off to different high schools in September.
That's why my daughter will be receiving a new phone as a graduation present.
